The 39th anniversary of Earth Day is upon us on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.During that day and the entire week, the entire world will be holding events to bring awareness to environmental issues.
The day was the invention of Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, and it was first celebrated on April 22, 1970. The first Earth Day marked the modern environmental movement and focused on wildlife extinction, misuse of pesticides, and pollution. The movement has evolved, participation has increased, and the issues being addressed have changed. Today, environmental groups are pushing agendas for cleaner energy sources, decreasing global warming, and decreasing one's carbon footprint.
Environmental responsibility is everyone’s responsibility, everyone can make a difference!
Many “green” people have shown themselves to be leaders in its environmental efforts. You too can be a leader. Show your support at an Earth Day event or think about changes in your life to be eco-friendly. Change incandescent lamp to CFL or LED to reduce energy bills and emissions from power plants. Simple change, big impact. Make your home an Energy Star! When you do home maintenance, also do a home energy audit to find out how you can save money by making your home more energy efficiency. And if every American home replaced just one conventional light bulb with a LED bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes a year. It's electric! You can check how much of your electricity comes from renewable "green" power sources, such as wind or solar. Green power produces less carbon emissions, reduces air pollution, and helps protect against future costs or scarcity of fossil fuels.
